SHADOW works at the point where a solid surface starts to behave like a fluid one. Several hundred rods rise from the ground and turn around a common centre; from a distance they read as a single system, up close each one carries the irregularities of the hand that formed it.
The charcoal black is matte and takes in nearly all direct light. What stays visible is not the plaster but the shadow each rod drops onto the panel behind it — the work is drawn in shadow, not in material.
The form gives the eye no edge to begin at. Under low raking light it turns graphic and architectural. Under diffuse light it closes into a single mass.
